EPM Gas Safe engineer diagnosing a domestic boiler fault

Domestic Boiler Repair – What to Expect

July 08, 20264 min read

If your boiler has stopped working or isn't performing as it should, we'll aim to identify the cause of the fault and get your heating and hot water back up and running as quickly as possible.

Some boiler repairs can be completed during the first visit, while others require replacement parts to be ordered. This guide explains what you can expect when you book a Domestic Boiler Repair with EPM.

Before Your Appointment

There's very little you need to do before we arrive.

If possible, please have the following information available when booking:

  • The make and model of your boiler.

  • Any fault code displayed.

  • A brief description of what's been happening.

  • Whether you've lost heating, hot water or both.

If possible, please ensure there is clear access to the boiler and surrounding area. We may also need access to the gas meter, as diagnostic testing and gas safety checks may require the gas supply to be tested or temporarily isolated.

We may also need to inspect the full length of the flue where accessible. If part of the flue runs through a loft or roof space, please ensure this area is accessible where it is safe to do so.

If there are any parking restrictions or access instructions, please let us know before the appointment.

This guide relates to domestic natural gas boilers. If you have an LPG or oil-fired boiler, please let us know when booking so we can arrange for a suitably qualified engineer to attend.

What Happens During the Visit?

When your Gas Safe engineer arrives, they'll first discuss the fault with you before carrying out diagnostic checks on the boiler and heating system.

The engineer will identify the cause of the fault where possible and explain the findings.

If the repair can be completed using parts carried on the van, we'll aim to complete the repair during the same visit. If specialist or manufacturer-specific parts are required, these may need to be ordered before a return visit can be arranged.

Once the repair has been completed, the boiler will be tested to ensure it is operating safely and correctly before the engineer leaves.

How Long Does It Usually Take?

Most boiler faults can be diagnosed within around 1 hour.

If a repair can be completed using parts carried on the van, it may also be completed during the same visit. Where replacement parts need to be ordered, a return visit will usually be required to complete the repair.

Things That Could Affect the Job

While many boiler repairs are straightforward, every fault is different. Occasionally we may find:

  • Replacement parts need to be ordered.

  • More than one fault is present.

  • The boiler is found to be unsafe.

  • The appliance is beyond economical repair.

  • Additional investigation is required before the fault can be identified.

If we discover anything that significantly changes the scope of work, we'll explain our findings and discuss the available options before carrying out any additional work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to repair my boiler?

Most faults can be diagnosed within around one hour. The overall repair time depends on the fault and whether replacement parts are immediately available.

Will my heating and hot water be turned off?

Yes. The boiler will need to be switched off while diagnostic checks and any repairs are carried out. If possible, your heating and hot water will be restored before the engineer leaves.

Does a boiler service prevent breakdowns?

An annual boiler service helps keep your boiler operating safely and efficiently and can identify potential issues before they become more serious. However, like any mechanical appliance, unexpected faults can still occur between services.

What if my boiler can't be repaired?

If the boiler is beyond economical repair or replacement parts are no longer available, we'll explain your options and provide honest advice on the most appropriate next steps.
