Gas Cooker Installation: What to Expect
Fitting a gas cooker isn't a job you can do yourself. It needs to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer by law, and for good reason. This guide explains what you can expect when you book a gas cooker installation with EPM.
Before Your Appointment
If you're supplying the cooker yourself, make sure it's been delivered and is in the property before the appointment. If you'd like EPM to supply the cooker, let the office know when you book and we'll arrange it.
If you have an existing cooker you want removed, let us know at the time of booking. We can arrange removal in some cases.
The engineer will need access to your gas meter on the day, so make sure it's accessible before we arrive.
What Happens During the Visit
The engineer will start by assessing the existing gas connection before any work begins.
The new cooker is positioned, connected to the gas supply, and a gas tightness test is carried out to confirm everything is sound.
If the cooker has electric ignition, a fan oven, or any other electrical functions, the electrical connection is checked and made safe at this stage.
A stability bracket is fitted to freestanding cookers. This is a legal requirement.
Once connected, the cooker is tested: ignition, burners, oven, grill.
Before leaving, the engineer will make sure the work area is left clean and tidy and answer any questions you may have.
How Long Does It Usually Take
Most gas cooker installations take between one and two hours. If anything changes the scope on the day, the engineer will let you know before proceeding.
Things That Could Affect the Job
- No existing gas supply at the cooker position
- The cooker location is being changed from its current position
- Limited access behind or around the cooker space
- The cooker has specific electrical requirements
- More than one person may be needed if EPM is supplying the cooker and access to the property is difficult
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to supply the cooker myself?
Not necessarily. EPM can supply the cooker or work with one you've already purchased. Let the office know when you book.
Can EPM remove my old cooker?
In some cases, yes. Let the office know at the time of booking and we'll confirm whether removal can be arranged.
Do I need a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit a gas cooker?
Yes. Connecting any appliance to a gas supply is notifiable gas work and must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. EPM is Gas Safe registered.
Will I receive a gas work record?
If you're a landlord, yes. Landlords are legally required to hold records of gas work carried out at rental properties. For owner-occupied properties, ask the office at the time of booking.
What if there's no gas supply where I want the cooker?
Get in touch before booking and describe what's currently in place. The right approach depends on your property.
