How to Tell If Your Radiators Need Power Flushing

So how do you know if a power flush is actually needed? And what does it involve?
First — What Is Power Flushing?
Power flushing is a deep clean of your central heating system.
We connect a special machine to your pipework and push water and cleaning chemicals through the radiators and boiler to clear out sludge, rust and debris.
The aim is to get your system back to full flow — improving heat output, efficiency and lifespan.
5 Signs You Might Need a Power Flush
1. Cold Radiators at the Bottom
Sludge tends to settle at the base of the radiator. If the top is hot but the bottom is cold, it’s often the first clue.
2. Noisy Boiler or Radiators
Kettling, banging, or gurgling sounds usually mean restricted flow or trapped air — often caused by sludge buildup.
3. Some Radiators Don’t Heat at All
Even with the system balanced and bled, some rads just don’t warm up. It could be blockage in the pipes or valves.
4. Discoloured Water When Bleeding
If you bleed a radiator and the water is dark or sludgy, that’s corrosion and debris from inside the system.
5. Frequent Boiler Lockouts or Error Codes
Modern boilers will shut down or show faults if they detect poor flow or restricted heat exchange.
When Power Flushing Makes the Most Sense

Before installing a new boiler on an old system
If you’ve had repeated radiator or pump issues
When controls and settings are fine, but heating is still poor
After long periods of the heating being unused (e.g. empty properties)
Not every issue needs a power flush — but it’s often cheaper and quicker than replacing radiators or pipework unnecessarily.
