Why Is My Outside Tap Leaking — and How Can I Fix It?

July 09, 20263 min read

A leaking outdoor tap might not seem urgent — until it runs up your water bill, soaks your garden wall, or freezes solid in winter.

We get called out to leaking garden taps regularly across Devon, from new builds in Exeter to old farm cottages with ancient pipework. Some fixes are quick; others point to bigger issues.

Here’s how to spot what’s wrong, how to fix it if you’re handy — and when to call someone in.

Common Causes of a Leaking Outside Tap

1. The Washer Inside the Tap Has Worn Out

This is the most common reason. If the tap drips when it’s turned off, the washer may have degraded and is no longer sealing properly.

2. Loose or Worn Gland Nut

If the tap leaks from around the spindle (where the handle turns), the gland packing inside might need tightening or replacing.

3. Freezing Weather Has Damaged the Tap or Pipe

If your outdoor tap leaked after winter, ice may have cracked the fitting or the pipe feeding it. This is especially common in exposed areas or if the tap wasn't isolated and drained properly.

4. Poor Installation or Seal

Some older or DIY-installed taps have thread seal issues or no proper backplate elbow, causing leaks around the wall fitting.

5. Hose Attachments or Connectors Are Dripping

Sometimes it’s not the tap at all — but a cheap or loose hose fitting dripping constantly from the nozzle.

Can I Fix It Myself?

If you’re confident with tools, here’s what you can try:

  • For a dripping tap head:
Turn off the mains supply, remove the tap head, replace the washer, and reassemble. Use plumber’s grease on moving parts.

  • For a leaking gland nut:
Try gently tightening the nut. If that fails, remove and repack it with PTFE tape or replace the gland washer.

  • For connection leaks:
Remove and refit the tap with fresh PTFE or thread seal, making sure all connections are snug but not overtightened.

🛑 Stop if you see:

  • Cracks in the wall or pipe

  • Water leaking from inside the property

  • Any sign of freezing damage or poor access

These require professional help to avoid water damage or hidden issues.
