Why Should I Service My Boiler Every Year?
Most people who get their boiler serviced every year do it for one of three reasons: the landlord told them to, the warranty says they have to, or they had a boiler break down in the middle of winter and never want to go through that again.
The third group tend to be the most committed about it.
Here is the case for annual boiler servicing, in plain terms.
It spots small problems before they become expensive ones
A boiler service is essentially a health check. The engineer inspects the components, tests the controls, checks the heat exchanger, cleans the burner where required and inspects the flue. Things that are starting to wear, corrode or degrade often show up at this stage.
A worn component caught early is usually a straightforward repair. The same component left until it fails completely can damage other parts of the boiler and turn a small job into a large one.
This is particularly true for older boilers. The older the boiler, the more value there is in an annual inspection.
It keeps your boiler running efficiently
A boiler that is not maintained loses efficiency over time. Limescale builds up. Burners get dirty. The boiler works harder than it needs to, and your energy bills reflect it.
A properly serviced boiler runs closer to its designed efficiency. Over a full heating season, that difference adds up.
It matters for safety
This is the one people sometimes dismiss, but it is worth taking seriously.
A boiler in poor condition can develop issues that lead to carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless. You cannot detect it without an alarm, and exposure can be fatal.
An annual service includes checking the flue, combustion and seals. These checks exist for a reason.
If you do not have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted in the same room as your boiler, fit one. It is not a substitute for a service, but both are worth having.
It is often required to maintain your warranty
Many boiler manufacturers require an annual service as a condition of their warranty. Skip a year and a warranty claim can be declined on that basis alone.
If your boiler is within its warranty period, check the terms. In most cases, the service needs to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer and the details recorded.
What a service can and cannot do
Having your boiler serviced every year reduces the likelihood of a breakdown. It does not eliminate it.
Components wear out. Parts fail. Sometimes a boiler that was inspected a few months ago will still develop a fault, because that is the nature of mechanical systems.
A service cannot flag a fault that does not yet exist. If a component was in acceptable condition at the time of the inspection and fails three months later, that is not something the service could have predicted or prevented.
What a service does is put your boiler in the best possible condition going into the heating season. It reduces risk, catches developing problems early, and gives you the best chance of getting through winter without a breakdown. Just with realistic expectations of what it can and cannot do.
When to book
Autumn is the right time. Ideally before the cold weather arrives and demand for engineers picks up.
A boiler that has sat unused through summer benefits from being checked before you actually need it. Booking in September or October means any issues can be dealt with before the heating goes on properly.
