How Much Does an EV Charger Installation Cost?

October 22, 2026

The cost of having a home EV charger installed depends on your property, and that's not a vague answer designed to avoid the question. It genuinely varies. The main variables are how far the cable has to run from your consumer unit to the charging point, and whether any work is needed at the consumer unit itself. For current rates, take a look at e-pm.uk/rates. If you send us a few details about your setup, we can usually give you a realistic idea before you commit to anything.

What the job usually covers

The core of any home EV charger installation is a dedicated circuit, run from your consumer unit to the charger location. The engineer checks the consumer unit has capacity for a new circuit, runs the cable, mounts the charger, and tests everything before leaving. Certification is completed as part of the job.

For most properties where the consumer unit is in good shape and the charger is going on a nearby outside wall, it is a clean, contained piece of work. Most installations take between three and five hours. That straightforward version is the least expensive.

What pushes the cost up

Cable run length is the biggest variable. The further the cable has to travel, the more time and material the job requires. If the route goes through solid masonry rather than a cavity wall, or along an external run across the building, that takes longer. A charger at the far end of a garage or on the opposite side of the house from the consumer unit is a more involved job than one fitted on the wall directly behind it.

The consumer unit is the other thing to look at. A dedicated EV charger circuit needs its own way in the consumer unit. If there is a spare way and the unit is in good condition, that is straightforward. If the consumer unit is full or needs attention before a new circuit can be added safely, that is additional work. It is not unusual, and we will always tell you before anything extra is started.

The grant most people forget to check

Eligible homeowners can currently claim up to £350 through the government's EV chargepoint grant scheme. The charger needs to be from an approved product list, and there are qualifying conditions around property type and ownership, but a significant number of people qualify without knowing it. It is worth checking your eligibility before booking, as it can make a meaningful difference to the overall cost.

Getting a number that means something

EPM does not give formal quotes without seeing the job, but most customers find a short conversation or a few photos is enough for us to give an honest estimate before they decide whether to go ahead.
