A slow-draining bath or a backed-up shower tray isn’t just annoying — it can lead to standing water, bad smells, and even leaks over time.
At EPM, we get called to blocked bath and shower drains across Exeter and the surrounding areas every single week. But the good news is: not every blockage needs a professional to fix it.
Here’s what you can try before picking up the phone — and how to tell when it’s time to get a pro involved.
Most shower and bath blockages are caused by a mix of:
Hair
Soap scum
Shampoo residue
Limescale or dirt buildup
Start by lifting the drain cover (if possible) and removing any visible gunk or hair buildup. Use gloves and a drain snake or bent wire hanger to fish out what you can.
You don’t need a massive toilet plunger — a small sink plunger can help dislodge minor blockages.
Add a little water to cover the drain
Seal the plunger over the hole and pump firmly a few times
If the water suddenly drains — you’ve cracked it
Be cautious not to plunge too aggressively, especially with older seals.
Pouring freshly boiled water (not straight from the kettle) down the drain in stages can help melt soap and grease.
Don’t do this if your plumbing includes plastic waste pipes that may warp or if you suspect there’s a deeper issue — this is best for minor slow drainage.
For a natural option:
Pour half a cup of bicarb down the drain
Follow with half a cup of white vinegar
Cover the drain, wait 10–15 minutes
Flush with hot water
This can shift minor blockages — but won’t touch more stubborn issues.
If any of the following apply, it’s time to book someone in:
Water won’t drain at all
You’ve tried DIY fixes with no improvement
There’s a foul smell that won’t go away
Water is backing up into other fixtures
You’re in a flat or shared system where one blockage affects multiple areas
At EPM, we use drain rods and mini jetting equipment to clear blockages quickly — and without damaging your bathroom.
If your bath or shower has been draining slowly for weeks, don’t let it turn into a full backup.
Try the simple fixes first — and if they don’t work, we’ll get you sorted quickly, cleanly, and without any mess left behind.

We provide fast, reliable, plumbing, heating, electrical, drainage and maintenance services for homes and businesses. Our team ensures your satisfaction with high-quality solutions.
