Cooker Hood Replacement – What to Expect

July 03, 20263 min read

Whether your existing cooker hood has stopped working, become noisy or you're simply updating your kitchen, replacing a cooker hood is usually a straightforward job. A working cooker hood helps remove steam, cooking odours and airborne grease, improving ventilation while you cook.

This guide explains what you can expect when you book a cooker hood replacement with EPM.

Before Your Appointment

There's very little you need to do before we arrive.

If possible, please send us a photograph of your existing cooker hood along with its approximate width when booking. This helps us ensure a suitable replacement can be supplied if required.

If you've purchased your own cooker hood, please have it available for the engineer when they arrive. We're happy to install customer-supplied cooker hoods, provided they're suitable for the existing installation.

If there are any parking restrictions or access instructions, please let us know when booking.

What Happens During the Visit?

When your electrician arrives, they'll first inspect the existing cooker hood and confirm that a replacement is the most suitable solution.

Before any work begins, the electrical supply to the cooker hood will be safely isolated. The existing hood will then be removed and the replacement installed.

Where suitable, the existing ducting will normally be reused. If the existing ducting isn't suitable or your new cooker hood requires a different arrangement, the electrician will discuss the available options with you. Some cooker hoods operate using recirculating filters and don't require external ducting.

Once installed, the cooker hood will be tested to ensure it is operating correctly before the work area is left clean and tidy.

How Long Does It Usually Take?

A straightforward cooker hood replacement typically takes around 1½ hours.

The exact time can vary depending on the type of cooker hood, ease of access and whether any alterations to the ducting or mounting are required.

Things That Could Affect the Job

While most cooker hood replacements are straightforward, every kitchen is different. Occasionally we may find:

  • The replacement cooker hood isn't the correct size for the existing opening.

  • Existing ducting requires alteration or replacement.

  • Built-in or integrated cooker hoods require additional time to remove or install.

  • Existing fixings or cabinetry require minor alterations to safely secure the new hood.

  • Additional electrical faults are identified during testing.

Minor adjustments are often part of the job and can usually be completed during the visit. If we discover anything that significantly changes the scope of work, we'll explain the available options before carrying out any additional work.
