Blocked drains are a pain — and chemical drain cleaners promise a quick fix. But are they really the best option?
At EPM, we’ve seen the aftermath of heavy drain cleaner use across kitchens and bathrooms from Exeter to Totnes. Sometimes they work… and sometimes they cause more trouble than they solve.
Here’s the truth about what they do, when they help, and when to avoid them entirely.
Most off-the-shelf drain cleaners use either:
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide)
Sulphuric acid
Enzyme-based cleaners for food/soap waste
They’re designed to break down grease, fat, and hair. But they can also generate heat, release fumes, and corrode pipework if used incorrectly.
Small, slow build-ups in kitchen sinks or bathroom basins
Greasy waste pipe residue (e.g. from washing up)
As a one-off, not a routine solution
They’re best used sparingly, with proper ventilation, and only when you’re sure the pipes are suitable (never on older plastic or aluminium).
We’ve been called to homes in Exmouth, Newton Abbot and Ivybridge where:
Cleaners were used in toilets and melted internal seals
A blocked pipe became fully sealed off by the cleaner itself
The fumes damaged chrome fittings
The chemical ran into the sewer line and caused wider issues
Some cleaners also harden into crystals if they don’t flush through — leading to worse blockages than before.
Try boiling water and detergent first
Use a manual plunger or simple drain snake
Try enzyme-based (eco) cleaners if you need a chemical option
If the drain’s still slow, call in a professional before trying harsher stuff
At EPM, we’ve cleared hundreds of blocked sinks and showers without a single drop of caustic chemicals — just rods, jetting, and experience.
Chemical cleaners aren’t evil — but they’re not magic either. For minor slow drains, they might help. For anything else, they can make a small job a lot more expensive.
