What Chemical Drain Cleaners Actually Do

Most off-the-shelf drain cleaners use either:

• Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide)

• Sulphuric acid

• Enzyme-based cleaners for food/soap waste

They’re designed to break down grease, fat, and hair. But they can also generate heat, release fumes, and corrode pipework if used incorrectly.

When They Can Help

• Small, slow build-ups in kitchen sinks or bathroom basins

• Greasy waste pipe residue (e.g. from washing up)

• As a one-off, not a routine solution

They’re best used sparingly, with proper ventilation, and only when you’re sure the pipes are suitable (never on older plastic or aluminium).

When They Cause Problems

• Cleaners were used in toilets and melted internal seals

• A blocked pipe became fully sealed off by the cleaner itself
