And with more modern boilers, EV chargers, and smart tech running off your home electrics, a surge protector isn’t just a nice extra — in many cases, it’s a smart move.

Here’s what you need to know about protecting your home’s critical systems from unexpected electrical damage.

What Is a Power Surge?

A power surge is a sudden spike in voltage that travels through your home’s wiring. It can be caused by:

  • Power grid switching

  • Faults from your supplier

  • Electrical storms

What Does This Have to Do with Boilers and EV Chargers?

So while it’s not mandatory in every home, electricians must document why it’s been included or excluded.

Compared to a £400+ boiler PCB replacement or a £900+ EV charger, it’s a wise investment.

Ask yourself:

  • Would you be comfortable replacing your boiler’s internals out of pocket?

  • Does your insurance cover surge damage?

  • Do you live in an area that’s had power cuts or fluctuations?
