Toilets are built to last — but not forever. And when something goes wrong, the big question is always:
Should we try to fix it, or just replace the whole thing?
At EPM, we’ve repaired and replaced thousands of toilets across Exeter and the wider Devon area. Sometimes a £10 part solves the issue. Other times, the fix takes longer — and costs nearly as much as a new unit.
Here’s how to tell when it’s worth repairing… and when replacement makes more sense.
We usually recommend a repair if:
The toilet is relatively modern (last 10–15 years)
The issue is isolated (e.g. fill valve, flush button, leaking seal)
The cistern or pan is accessible and undamaged
The ceramic isn’t cracked or stained
Replacement parts are available and affordable
Common repair jobs include:
Replacing a faulty syphon or flush valve
Fixing a constantly running toilet
Changing a split flush button
Replacing the inlet valve or ballcock
Resealing a leaking pan connector or base
These are often quick, low-cost fixes — and we carry many parts on the van for same-day repairs.
Here’s when we usually suggest a full replacement instead:
Even small cracks in the ceramic can lead to leaks, smells, or complete failure. Once it’s cracked, it’s a replacement job.
If we’re fixing one issue and two more show up — that’s a red flag. Old toilets with worn-out internal fittings can keep costing you.
Some older models have discontinued parts, difficult access panels, or awkward flush systems. A new toilet with modern fittings is often quicker and cheaper in the long run.
Older toilets can use up to 13 litres per flush — compared to just 4–6 litres on new dual-flush models. If you’re already considering work, this is a great reason to upgrade.
If tiles are coming up, flooring is changing, or the bathroom layout is shifting, it usually makes sense to fit a new toilet while access is easy.
Typical costs in and around Exeter:
Repairs (parts + labour): £90–£180 depending on access and parts
Full replacement (supply and fit): £220–£350
(More if you're upgrading to wall-hung or designer models)
We'll always give you an honest estimate first, and we’ll never push for replacement if a simple fix will do.
