Why Does My Socket Keep Tripping?

September 24, 20251 min read

If your socket keeps tripping, it’s usually whatever you’ve got plugged into it.

That’s where you start.

Most of the time, it’s not the socket.

Start With What’s Plugged In

If it trips when you switch something on, that appliance is the issue.

Kettles, toasters, heaters, washing machines. They wear out, and when they do, they start tripping the circuit.

Unplug everything and try them one by one. You’ll usually find it pretty quickly.

Don’t Overthink It

If it’s just one socket, it’s nearly always something local.

It’s either the appliance, or something directly behind that socket.

It’s not going to be a fault somewhere else in the property.

When It’s Not the Appliance

If it still trips with nothing plugged in, or it trips as soon as you reset it, then it’s not what’s plugged in.

That’s when you’re into the socket itself or the wiring behind it.

Loose connections, damaged cable, sometimes moisture.

When to Get It Checked

If you’ve ruled out appliances and it’s still tripping, it needs looking at.

Same if it’s getting worse, happening more often, or affecting more than one socket.

At that point, it’s not something to ignore.

What It Comes Down To

If it keeps tripping, something isn’t right.

Start with what’s plugged in. If it’s not that, it’s the socket or wiring.

Final Thought

People often assume it’s the electrics straight away.

Most of the time, it isn’t.

It’s whatever they’ve plugged into it.
