Why Does My Drain Keep Overflowing?

July 15, 20261 min read

If your drain keeps overflowing, it hasn’t actually been cleared properly.

It might have been unblocked enough to get water moving again, but something is still in there. That’s why it works for a bit, then backs up again.

What’s Causing It

Most of the time it’s build-up that’s been there a while.

Grease, food waste, soap, it all sticks to the inside of the pipe and slowly narrows it. You don’t notice it at first, then one day it just can’t cope and starts overflowing.

Clear the top of it and it’ll seem fine, but it’s still there, so it comes back.

Something Stuck in the Pipe

Sometimes there’s something sat in there catching everything.

Wipes are a common one. They don’t break down, so they sit there and catch debris.

Even if water gets past, it keeps building up until it blocks again.

When It’s the Pipe Itself

Sometimes the issue isn’t what’s in the pipe, it’s the pipe.

Bad fall, dips, or it’s just been installed poorly at some point. Waste slows down instead of flowing away, and once that starts, it keeps happening.

Outside Drains

Tree roots can get into pipes through small gaps.

Once they’re in, they grow and restrict the flow. That’s not a one-off problem, it just keeps coming back.

What Actually Fixes It

If it keeps overflowing, it needs more than a quick unblock.

Most of the time it needs properly cleaning out. Jetting clears the build-up off the pipe walls, not just the blockage.

If it’s not obvious, a camera will show exactly what’s going on.

Final Thought

If it’s overflowing more than once, there’s always a reason.

It’s usually build-up, something stuck, or the pipe not flowing properly. Once that’s sorted properly, it stops happening.
