6 Common Electrical Faults in Kitchens (And What Causes Them)

March 06, 20263 min read

The kitchen is the hardest-working room in the house when it comes to electrics. From kettles to cookers, lighting to washing machines — it all relies on safe, reliable wiring.

At EPM, we’re regularly called out across Exeter, Exmouth, Dawlish and the South Hams to investigate electrical faults in kitchens. Whether it's tripping circuits or flickering lights, most issues boil down to a handful of causes.

Here are six of the most common electrical problems we find — and what might be behind them.

1. Sockets That Don’t Work (or Spark When You Plug In)

This is one of the most frequent complaints — especially in older homes or after kitchen renovations.

What causes it?

  • Loose connections at the socket or back box

  • Worn or damaged outlet faceplates

  • Overloaded circuits (too many high-powered appliances)

  • DIY jobs that skipped testing or used the wrong cable

2. Circuit Breaker Tripping When Using Appliances

You boil the kettle and the microwave — and everything trips.

What causes it?

  • Overloaded ring main or cooker circuit

  • Faulty appliances causing residual current trips

  • Damp or damaged cabling behind tiled splashbacks

  • Undersized breakers or improperly rated wiring

3. Flickering or Buzzing Kitchen Lights

This can happen even with new LED fittings.

What causes it?

  • Loose neutral connections

  • Faulty dimmer switches not compatible with LED bulbs

  • Poor-quality fittings or transformers

  • Wiring faults in the lighting circuit itself

4. Cooker Hood or Extractor Not Working

This one’s surprisingly common — especially after refits.

What causes it?

  • Faulty isolator switch

  • No power supply at all (not connected properly)

  • Internal fuse blown within the hood

  • Moisture ingress from steam or poor ventilation

5. RCD Trips When It Rains

Strange but true — we’ve traced more than one kitchen RCD trip to outdoor wiring that’s been connected through the same board.

What causes it?

  • Outdoor sockets on the same circuit as kitchen wiring

  • Moisture ingress into external lighting or junction boxes

  • Shared earth faults

6. Random “Dead” Zones After Renovations

This happens when part of the kitchen electrics go down after a remodel.

What causes it?

  • Wires accidentally buried behind cabinets or walls

  • Circuits not reconnected properly after work

  • Spur outlets disconnected during fitting

  • Lack of electrical testing after building work

What to Do

Don’t just reset the fuse and hope for the best — kitchen electrics are under heavy daily use, and faults can be dangerous.

At EPM, we:

  • Carry out full fault-finding and circuit testing

  • Identify overloaded or unsafe circuits

  • Upgrade kitchen wiring where needed

  • Offer same-day callouts across Exeter and surrounding towns

What It Might Cost

  • Socket or light fault diagnosis: £75–£120

  • Repair of loose or faulty wiring: Case-by-case — clear estimate always given

  • Partial kitchen rewire (if needed): £450–£1,200 depending on size and access

Final Word from EPM

If you’re noticing odd smells, flickering lights, or unexplained tripping — don’t ignore it.
We’ll get to the bottom of it quickly, cleanly, and with zero drama.
