Most of us don’t give much thought to the wiring behind the walls — until the lights flicker, the sockets spark, or we’re planning a renovation.

But outdated electrics aren’t just inconvenient. They can be unsafe, inefficient, and incompatible with the way modern homes are used.

At EPM, we regularly inspect and upgrade electrical systems across Exeter, Exmouth, and towns throughout the South Hams. Here’s how to tell if your wiring or consumer unit might be due for an update.

1. You Still Have a Fuse Box, Not a Modern Consumer Unit

Old-style fuse boxes (with pull-out fuses or cartridge-style breakers) don’t offer the same level of protection as modern consumer units with RCDs and MCBs.

If your board looks outdated, is made of wood, or has no clear labelling — it’s time for a check.

2. Sockets or Switches Are Discoloured or Warm

If you’ve got yellowing socket fronts, cracking plastic, or switches that feel hot, it could mean:

• Overloaded circuits

• Loose or deteriorated wiring

• Signs of minor arcing behind the scenes

This is especially common in homes that haven’t had electrical work since the 80s or 90s.

3. Lights Flicker or Trip the Breaker

Occasional flickering may be a bulb issue — but if it’s regular or linked to other appliances running, it could mean your circuits aren’t coping.

This is common in kitchens and loft conversions where modern usage has outgrown the original wiring.

4. You Don’t Have Enough Sockets

Extension leads and multi-plug adapters might solve the problem short-term, but they can put unnecessary strain on old circuits.

If you’ve got only one or two sockets per room, your system probably predates modern standards.

5. You’re Planning a Renovation or Change of Use

If you’re converting a garage, adding an extension, or creating a home office — your existing wiring needs reviewing.

Older installations may not meet current regs, and it’s far cheaper to address them before you plaster or decorate.

What We Check During an EICR

If you’re unsure whether your system’s outdated, we can carry out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This includes:

• Visual inspection of wiring, sockets, and fittings

• Testing of circuits, breakers, and bonding

• Assessment of the consumer unit

• A full report with any required improvements
