Flickering lights can be more than just annoying — they might be trying to tell you something.

At EPM, we’re regularly called out across Exeter to investigate lighting issues. Sometimes it’s a simple fix. Other times, it points to a deeper electrical problem that needs attention.

Here are six common causes, what they mean, and when you should act.

1. Loose Bulb or Poor Connection

This is the best-case scenario. If a bulb is slightly loose in its fitting, it may not make proper contact and cause flickering.
Try switching the light off and tightening it gently.

Fix: Tighten or replace the bulb. If the issue continues, the connection in the fitting may be worn or corroded.

2. Faulty Light Switch

Old or low-quality switches can wear out or become loose over time, especially in busy rooms like kitchens or hallways.
You might notice flickering when the switch is halfway on or if it feels stiff or clicky.

Fix: Replacing the switch is usually a quick job — just make sure it’s done safely and by a qualified electrician if you're unsure.

3. Dimmer Switch Compatibility

LED bulbs and dimmer switches don’t always get along. If your dimmer isn’t rated for LEDs, the bulbs can flicker, buzz or not work at all.

Fix: Check that your dimmer is LED-compatible and replace it if needed. Most modern dimmers will clearly state their rating.

4. Overloaded Circuit

If your lights flicker when you switch on appliances like kettles, washing machines or microwaves, it could be a sign your circuit is under strain.

This is more common in older homes where electrics haven’t been updated to match modern usage.

Fix: You may need a dedicated circuit for larger appliances — or even a consumer unit upgrade, depending on the situation.

5. Loose Wiring or Connections

This is one to take seriously. Loose wiring can cause arcing, which may lead to heat, damage or even fire if left unchecked.

Signs to watch for:

• Flickering that gets worse over time

• Hot switch plates

• Buzzing or crackling sounds

6. Incoming Supply Issues

If all the lights in your home are flickering — or you’ve noticed problems at your neighbour’s too — the issue could be with the incoming supply.

This can be due to problems on the network, weather damage or faults with your main supply cables.

Fix: If we suspect the issue is on the network side, we’ll advise you to contact your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). We can help you confirm it’s not a fault on your side first.
