Gutters aren’t exactly glamorous — but ignore them, and you could end up with a leaking roof, damp walls, or even structural damage.
At EPM, we’ve seen it all across Devon — from plants growing out of gutters in Torquay to water pouring over blocked downpipes in central Exeter.
Here’s what to look out for, when to DIY, and when to pick up the phone.
Gutters and downpipes are there to channel water away from your home. When they’re blocked or leaking, water ends up:
Overflowing onto brickwork
Pooling near foundations
Soaking fascias and soffits
Seeping into roof spaces and wall cavities
Left unchecked, it’s a fast track to damp, timber decay, and even internal mould.
Leaves and moss buildup (especially in autumn)
Bird nests or debris in downpipes
Broken gutter brackets or poor falls
Roof tile debris and gravel from old felt
Poorly angled or badly connected downpipes
Rural and tree-heavy areas of Devon are particularly prone — especially after storms or heavy winds.
Water spilling over edges during rain
Stains or green streaks on exterior walls
Sagging or warped gutters
Water pooling near doors or paths
Dripping or trickling sounds long after the rain stops
If you spot any of these, it’s worth investigating sooner rather than later.
If the blockage is minor and you have safe ladder access, you can try:
Removing debris by hand (wear gloves)
Flushing gutters with a hose
Checking downpipe flow by pouring water in at the top
Never lean too far or overreach — it’s not worth the risk.
Also avoid pressure washers — they can damage seals or push joints loose.
We recommend calling in the pros when:
The blockage is high up or near the roofline
You can’t identify the source
The system is leaking or pulling away
You’ve had repeat issues after cleaning
You live in a tall or difficult-to-access property
At EPM, we use safe access systems and equipment that allow us to clear and inspect gutters quickly — without mess, risk, or damage to your home.
Gutter clearing (standard 2-bed home): £120–£180
Gutter and downpipe inspection with photos: £100–150
Minor repairs or refits: Priced after inspection — with a clear estimate
We also offer full annual maintenance plans, which can include gutter inspections as part of the service.
Blocked gutters might seem like a small thing — until the damage shows up indoors.
If in doubt, give us a call. We’ll take a look, get things flowing again, and help keep your home dry and protected all year round.

We provide fast, reliable, plumbing, heating, electrical, drainage and maintenance services for homes and businesses. Our team ensures your satisfaction with high-quality solutions.
