Domestic Boiler Replacement – What to Expect

June 23, 20263 min read

If your boiler has reached the end of its life, is becoming unreliable or is no longer economical to repair, replacing it can improve reliability, efficiency and performance.

Every property is different, so we normally carry out a site survey before providing a quotation. This guide explains what you can expect when you choose EPM to replace your domestic boiler.

Before Your Appointment

Before replacing your boiler, we'll usually carry out a site visit to assess your existing heating system and discuss your requirements.

During the survey we'll assess the existing boiler location, flue route, heating system and controls to recommend a suitable replacement boiler.

If possible, please ensure there is clear access to the boiler, gas meter and surrounding pipework. We may also need access to the flue route, which could involve entering the loft where it is safe to do so.

If there are any parking restrictions or access instructions, please let us know before the appointment.

This guide relates to domestic natural gas boilers. If you have an LPG or oil-fired boiler, please let us know during the survey so we can recommend an appropriate solution.

What Happens During the Installation?

On the day of installation, your engineer will first protect the work area before isolating the gas, water and electrical supplies as required.

The existing boiler will be safely disconnected and removed before the new boiler is installed. Any necessary alterations to the pipework, flue or controls will be completed as agreed during the quotation stage.

Once installed, the system will be filled, tested and commissioned. Your engineer will explain how to operate the new boiler, complete the manufacturer's commissioning requirements and register the warranty where applicable.

The work area will be left clean and tidy, and the old boiler and associated waste will be removed from site.

How Long Does It Usually Take?

A straightforward boiler replacement typically takes around 2 days.

If the installation involves changing the type of heating system or significant alterations to pipework, controls or the flue, the installation may take around 3 days.

Things That Could Affect the Job

While most boiler replacements are straightforward, every property is different. Occasionally we may find:

  • Alterations required to the flue route.

  • Pipework modifications.

  • Heating controls requiring upgrading.

  • Existing system issues that need addressing.

  • Difficult access, particularly where the flue passes through a high roof.

  • Additional electrical work required.

If we discover anything that significantly changes the scope of work, we'll explain our findings and discuss the available options before carrying out any additional work.
