Domestic Central Heating Repair – What to Expect

June 11, 20263 min read

Introduction

If your central heating isn't working properly, it doesn't always mean your boiler is faulty. Cold radiators, noisy pipework, poor circulation or heating that won't switch on can all be caused by faults elsewhere within the heating system.

Our engineers will diagnose the problem, explain what they've found and recommend the most appropriate repair to get your heating working again.

Before Your Appointment

If possible, please let us know:

  • Which parts of the heating system are affected.
  • Whether you have hot water as well as heating.
  • Any fault codes displayed on the boiler.
  • When the problem first started.
  • Any unusual noises, leaks or changes in performance.

Please ensure we have access to:

  • The boiler.
  • Hot water cylinder (if applicable).
  • Any affected radiators.
  • The thermostat and heating controls.

If there are parking restrictions or access instructions, please let us know before the appointment.

What Happens During the Visit?

Your engineer will begin by discussing the fault before carrying out diagnostic checks on your heating system.

Depending on the symptoms, this may include checking:

  • Boiler operation.
  • System pressure.
  • Heating controls and thermostat.
  • Circulation pump.
  • Motorised valves.
  • Radiators.
  • Pipework.
  • Expansion vessel (where applicable).

Many faults can be repaired during the initial visit if replacement parts are carried on the van.

If specialist parts are required, we'll explain the fault, provide a quotation if necessary and arrange a convenient return visit.

How Long Does It Usually Take?

Most central heating fault diagnosis appointments take around one hour.

If repairs can be completed during the visit, the appointment may take longer depending on the fault and any replacement parts required.

Things That Could Affect the Job

Every heating system is different. Occasionally we may discover:

  • Multiple faults within the heating system.
  • Failed pumps or motorised valves.
  • Sludge affecting circulation.
  • Faulty heating controls.
  • Airlocks.
  • Hidden leaks.
  • Obsolete parts that are no longer available.

If additional work is required, your engineer will explain the options before carrying out any further repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

My boiler works but some radiators stay cold. Can you fix this?

Yes. Cold radiators can be caused by air, sludge, faulty valves or circulation issues. We'll identify the cause and recommend the appropriate repair.

Do I need a new boiler?

Not necessarily. Many heating faults are caused by components elsewhere in the heating system rather than the boiler itself.

Can you repair the problem on the first visit?

Where possible, yes. Our engineers carry a range of common replacement parts. If additional parts are required, we'll arrange a return visit.

Will I be without heating?

In some cases, the heating may need to be switched off while repairs are carried out. We'll restore the system as soon as it is safe to do so.
