If you’ve looked at your boiler and noticed the pressure gauge dropping, it can be a little concerning. Many homeowners first realise something isn’t right when the heating stops working properly or the boiler displays a warning.
Occasionally needing to top up the pressure isn’t unusual, but if it keeps happening it usually means something within the heating system needs attention.
In this article we’ll explain what boiler pressure means, why it can drop over time, and what you can check before arranging a repair.
Most modern boilers operate best at around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold.
When the heating is switched on, the pressure will normally increase slightly as the water inside the system warms up and expands. This is completely normal.
If the pressure drops too low, however, the boiler may stop operating properly or display a fault code.
There are several reasons boiler pressure can fall. Some are relatively minor, while others may indicate a problem somewhere in the heating system.
One of the most common causes is a small leak somewhere in the pipework or radiators.
Sometimes these leaks are obvious, but in many cases they are very slow and difficult to notice. Even a small drip over time can gradually reduce pressure in the system.
Checking around radiators, valves and exposed pipework for signs of water can sometimes reveal the source.
If you have recently bled a radiator, the pressure in the system may drop slightly afterwards.
Bleeding radiators releases trapped air from the heating system, which can reduce the overall pressure. In this situation the boiler may simply need to be topped up again.
It’s quite common for homeowners to bleed radiators and then forget to check the boiler pressure afterwards, which can leave the system running below its normal operating level.
Boilers include a pressure relief valve designed to release water if pressure becomes too high.
If this valve begins to fail or becomes worn, it may allow small amounts of water to escape even when the pressure is normal. This can gradually lower the pressure over time.
Inside most modern boilers is a component called an expansion vessel, which helps regulate pressure changes as the water heats and cools.
If the expansion vessel loses its internal charge or develops a fault, the system pressure can fluctuate and drop more frequently.
During routine boiler servicing, engineers will usually check the condition and charge of the expansion vessel to make sure it is operating correctly.
Like any plumbing system, boilers and heating systems contain numerous seals, valves and fittings. Over time these components can wear out or deteriorate.
Occasionally a seal or joint simply reaches the end of its lifespan and begins allowing small amounts of water to escape from the system.
If the pressure has dropped below the recommended level, it is often possible to repressurise the system using the boiler’s filling loop.
This allows additional water to enter the heating system and bring the pressure back to the normal operating range.
Once the pressure has reached the correct level, it’s important to fully close the filling loop again. If the filling valves are left open, the system can slowly over-pressurise.
When this happens, the boiler’s pressure relief valve may begin releasing water. Over time this can lead to a cycle where the system keeps losing pressure and needing to be topped up again.
If you’re unsure how to repressurise the system, a heating engineer can usually show you how the filling loop works during a visit so you feel confident topping it up if needed in the future.
If the pressure drops occasionally and stays stable after topping up, it may not be a major concern.
However, if you find yourself repressurising the boiler regularly, it usually means there is an underlying issue somewhere in the system.
Signs that the system may need attention include:
pressure dropping repeatedly
visible leaks around radiators or pipework
the boiler shutting down due to low pressure
water appearing from the pressure relief pipe outside the property
In these situations it’s usually best to have the system inspected so the root cause can be identified.
Boiler pressure dropping occasionally isn’t always unusual, but frequent pressure loss usually indicates that something within the heating system isn’t working as it should.
Small leaks, ageing components or issues with internal boiler parts can all contribute to the problem.
