Radiator Replacement – What to Expect

June 08, 20263 min read

If your radiator is leaking, damaged, no longer heating efficiently or you're simply replacing it with a new style or size, we'll safely remove the existing radiator and install the replacement.

Most radiator replacements can be completed during a single visit where the replacement is like-for-like and the existing pipework is suitable. This guide explains what you can expect when you book a Radiator Replacement with EPM.

Before Your Appointment

To help us prepare for your appointment, it is helpful if you can provide:

  • A photograph of the existing radiator and surrounding area.
  • The size of the replacement radiator, if you have already purchased it.
  • Details of whether you are supplying the radiator or would like us to supply one.

Please ensure there is clear access to the radiator by moving any furniture or belongings away from the working area before the engineer arrives.

If there are any parking restrictions or access instructions, please let us know before the appointment.

What Happens During the Visit?

When the engineer arrives, they'll first confirm the replacement radiator and inspect the existing installation.

The heating system will be isolated or drained as required before the existing radiator is removed.

The replacement radiator will then be installed using suitable valves and fittings where required before the system is refilled, vented and tested for leaks. Finally, the radiator will be checked to ensure it is heating correctly before the engineer leaves.

How Long Does It Usually Take?

A straightforward like-for-like radiator replacement is typically completed within around 3 hours.

Larger systems, difficult isolation, or additional pipework alterations may increase the time required.

Things That Could Affect the Job

While many radiator replacements are straightforward, occasionally we may find:

  • The replacement radiator is a different size and pipework requires alteration.
  • The heating system cannot be isolated easily and requires additional draining and refilling.
  • Existing pipework requires repairs or alterations.
  • The wall is not suitable to safely support the new radiator.
  • Additional making good is required after removing the existing radiator.

If we discover anything that significantly changes the scope of work, we'll explain our findings and discuss the available options before carrying out any additional work.
