Why Does My Shower Keep Going Hot and Cold?

May 13, 20261 min read

If your shower keeps going hot and cold, it’s usually one of two things.

Pressure changing somewhere in the house, or the shower valve starting to fail.

Most of the time, it’s that simple.

Pressure Changing in the House

This is the main one.

If someone turns a tap on, flushes the toilet, or anything else uses water, it changes the pressure in the pipes.

Your shower is trying to balance hot and cold. As soon as that pressure shifts, the balance goes and the temperature changes.

You’ll notice it straight away. Fine one second, then suddenly too hot or too cold.

The Shower Valve Wearing Out

If it’s happening even when nothing else is being used, it’s usually the valve.

Inside the shower is a thermostatic valve that’s meant to keep the temperature steady.

As it wears out, it stops doing that properly. Instead of correcting small changes, it overreacts.

That’s when you get the constant hot and cold swings.

Combi Boiler Setups

If you’ve got a combi boiler, it’s more noticeable.

Everything is coming from one source, so any change in demand affects the temperature.

Run a tap, flush a toilet, and the shower feels it straight away.

What It Comes Down To

It’s rarely anything complicated.

It’s usually pressure being pulled elsewhere or a worn valve that can’t keep up.

What to Look For

If it only happens when water is used elsewhere, it’s pressure.

If it happens all the time, it’s usually the valve.

That’s normally enough to narrow it down.

Final Thoughts

If your shower keeps going hot and cold, it’s not random.

There’s always a reason for it, and most of the time it comes down to pressure or the valve.

Once you know which one it is, it’s a straightforward fix.
