Why Does My Tap Take So Long to Get Hot?

April 20, 20261 min read

If your tap takes a while to get hot, you’re just waiting for the cold water in the pipe to clear.

That’s it most of the time.

The further the tap is from the boiler or cylinder, the longer that pipe is, and the longer it takes.

Why It Happens

When you turn the hot tap on, the pipe is full of cold water that’s been sat there.

Until that’s pushed out, the hot water can’t get to you.

Long pipe, longer wait.

Where You Notice It

You’ll see it more on upstairs bathrooms, extensions, or kitchens a long way from the boiler.

Anywhere the run is longer, it takes longer.

Combi Boilers

With a combi, there’s usually a slight delay while it fires up.

Most modern boilers also have a pre-heat function to reduce that delay. If that’s turned off, it can take longer for hot water to come through.

So you’ve got two things happening. The boiler getting up to temperature, and the cold water clearing.

When It’s More Than That

If it feels excessive, it’s usually the pipework.

Long runs, poor routing, or pipes that have been altered over time so they’re not direct anymore.

You’re still just waiting for water to travel further than it needs to.

Final Thought

If your tap takes time to get hot, it’s not a fault in most cases.

You’re just waiting for the cold water in the pipe to clear.

Short run, quick hot water. Long run, longer wait.

That’s all it is most of the time.
