Our Favourite Reactive Callouts of the Year (And What They Taught Us)

May 25, 20263 min read

In 2025, we’ve responded to hundreds of urgent callouts across Devon — from Exeter’s city centre to cottages deep in the South Hams. And while no two days are the same at EPM, some jobs stick with us for all the right reasons.

Not just because of what we fixed — but what they reminded us about why reactiveness matters.

Here are a few of our favourites from this year, and the lessons they offered.

1. The Frozen Pipe That Didn’t Wait for Morning

We had a call at 11:46pm on a freezing January night. A family near Exmouth had a burst pipe in the loft — water pouring through the ceiling and no idea how to shut it off.

We were there in under 40 minutes.

Why it stuck with us:
Because in that moment, they didn’t just need a plumber. They needed calm, clarity, and someone who’d take control. That’s the kind of response that builds trust for life.

2. The Mice That Ate the Pipework

A homeowner near Totnes had no heating — turned out mice had chewed through plastic pipework under the floor.

We traced the issue, repaired the damage, and gave them a recommendation to prevent it happening again.

Why it stuck with us:
Reactive doesn’t just mean fast. It means thorough. Anyone can patch a leak — we fixed the cause.

3. The DIY Electrical Job That Nearly Ended in Tears

A young couple in Exeter had tried to install their own oven. The wiring behind the cooker had melted, and the circuit breaker kept tripping.

We made it safe, rewired the connection, and tested the full circuit. No judgement — just reassurance and a fast fix.

Why it stuck with us:
Because this is exactly why we tell people not to DIY electrics. You might not see the danger… until it’s too late.

4. The Hot Water Tank Ready to Pop

In a village outside Newton Abbot, we were called for “a noisy hot water system.”

We arrived to find a failed expansion vessel and a TPR valve on the edge. The customer had no idea it was dangerous — they just wanted it “to stop making that banging noise.”

Why it stuck with us:
Because quiet callouts can hide serious risks. And reactiveness means acting before things get worse.

Final Word from EPM

What ties all these together?

  • We got there fast

  • We sorted the issue fully

  • And we left customers feeling safe, confident, and looked after

That’s what being the most reactive maintenance company in Devon really means to us — and in 2026, we plan to make even more noise about it.
